The Sons of Shaykh Ahmadou Bamba
Following are some of the sons of Shaykh Ahmadou Bamba whom
we will present to our noble readers. Understandably, these
bio-sketches do not do justice to these holy individuals as
an entire book could be written on each of them. From Shaykh
Moustapha who, during the great depression, struggled to make
a bold achievement that will last a lifetime, to Shaykh Mourtada
who engages himself on a perpetual peaceful holy war to raise
the flag of Islam throughout the Continents, all the children
of Shaykh Ahmad Bamba have played monumental role in the socio-economic
development of Senegal, as well as in its educational and cultural
level.
Therefore, throughout the following pages, we will simply glimpse
at their life story while begging our readers to forgive us
for our shortcomings.

hijra in Darou Salam corresponding to 1888.

branches. He took over the khilafa after Shaykh Ahmadou
Bamba in the month of July 1927. He undertook the difficult
task of constructing the Mosque of Touba during the great
depression, of raising the great murid family and of uniting
the community while keeping the line of communication
with the French colonialists during the second World War
among other things. He secured and guided the construction
of the railway system, which enabled the transportation

suckling, it was Shaykh Mouhammadou Fadil's mother who
completed his period of suckling. Known probably as one
of Bamba's most mystical son, he performed wonders of
many kinds that would not be fit to be written in a bio-sketch
like this. Wrote books of profound meanings, among which
some dealt with the sacred meaning of the Qur'an others
with the divine attributes. He taught his disciples asceticism,
piety and the attachment to the Qur'an reading. He never
lived to be khalife as he passed away in 1935 or 36 according

the personification of those great Sufi ascetics we read
in history books, and their habits (sober diet, meditation,
contemplation, detachment, etc), but never get to see;
he cultivates the farms like no one does and have a tremendous
